From the Recorder: February 3, 1944

In today's article from February 3, 1944, we learn about the failed attempt to fill the village board vacancy created by the departure of finance trustee Wayne Baird to the Navy. Board Chairman Harry Bothmer nominated Kenneth W. Haynie to fill the post until the April election. The appointment failed on a 2-2 vote, so Ralston continued with a four-person board until after the April election.

When asked about the consequences of the vote, Chairman Bothmer said, "I am not worried, particularly. Don't forget we have a very efficient and loyal village treasurer in Laura Shively. I'm sure everything will work out all-right [sic]."
