According to the October 10, 1946 Ralston Recorder, a petition was circulating against a proposed zoning change that would let Martin Hansen's Frozen Food Locker plant, just west of the telephone office, slaughter livestock on site — neighbors worried about flies and odor, while old-timer A.E. Van Fleet said he'd never known a slaughterhouse without them.
