From the Recorder: September 28, 1944

In today's article from the September 28, 1944 edition of the Ralston Recorder, it is announced that the Ralston Village Board has authorized the board chairman to close bars and other liquor establishments "in times of emergency".

Also of note from the meeting minutes is that the meeting ran from 7:30 to 11:30 pm. The previous two meetings were 7:30 to 10:15 pm. A typical meeting these days is about 30 minutes long. Changes in responsibilities and technology explain a lot of that. For example, the meeting minutes note the board approved the appointment of "H. Christian" to the Ralston Volunteer Fire Department, something that these days is handled by the RVFD itself. Also part of the meeting minutes was the reading of letters sent by the village attorney to residents violating Ordinance 172. If that was something the council needed to know today, it would have been distributed electronically ahead of time.

Ordinance 172, by the way, was passed on March 18, 1941, and made it unlawful for anyone to occupy any building within the Village of Ralston "without having proper and sufficient plumbing facilities and fixtures for the disposition of sewerage."
